Transmission
Your car’s transmission is one of the
most important parts
of the entire vehicle. The
transmission
is what transmits the power generated by your engine to
the
drive wheels. Engines
operate at a high rotational
speed, much faster than a car’s wheels will typically spin. The transmission reduces the
higher engine
speed to the slower wheel speed, and increases torque
(turning force) while
doing so.
Your transmission changes gear ratios which
allows your vehicle to have enough power to start from a stop and
switch away
from such a low gear when the vehicle picks up speed, allowing the
engine to
turn at a much slower more efficient speed rather than spinning faster
and
faster as your car accelerates.
There are three main types of
transmissions used in today’s vehicles- the manual or standard
transmission,
the automatic transmission, and the CVT (continually variable
transmission)
which all work differently despite having the same purpose. A manual transmission uses
actual metal gears
that turn against one another, and the transmission can be separated
from the
engine temporarily by use of a clutch to change gears with different
ratios. An
automatic transmission uses pressurized
fluid to transmit its power through various gear ratios rather than
physically
connecting gears and a torque converter which allows slippage of power
rather
than a clutch. A
CVT uses belts or
chains which move across pulleys that smoothly expand and contract to
continuously
change gear ratios to varying sizes rather than having a set number of
pre-determined gear ratios.
No matter how it works, if your
transmission fails your car won’t move no matter how well the engine
runs. Here at FCP
Groton we have a large selection
of high quality parts that allow you to maintain or repair your
vehicle’s
transmission (and related parts) and ensure you get where you need to
go day
after day. FCP Groton carries a wide selection of OEM and aftermarket
Volvo transmission parts, BMW transmission parts, Audi transmission
parts, VW transmission parts and Mercedes.
